PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES

Start research with the decision it must inform.

Prepare a clear brief for product evaluation, shelf-life planning, consumer research or a controlled comparison.

A shared brief makes proposals comparable

Scope elementQuestion to answer
Business decisionWhat decision should the work inform?
Proposed statementExact claim or technical question; no assumed outcome
Test productFormula version, material identity, serving and package as applicable
Existing evidenceRelevant source documents and limits to their applicability
ComparisonReference product or control, if the question requires one
Design & endpointsPopulation or test system, outcomes, methods and analysis questions
Execution & reviewQualified provider, scientific review and ethics requirements as applicable
OperationsSamples, storage, recruitment if relevant, timeline and responsibilities
Costs & deliverablesIncluded work, exclusions, data/report rights and interpretation scope
Decision gateWhat result would justify the next development or commercial step?

Different questions need different designs

Feasibility

Identify practical uncertainties before a larger program. Define what a preliminary result can and cannot establish.

Consumer experience

Assess the stated experience under defined conditions. Keep perception findings distinct from clinical or instrumental outcomes.

Controlled comparison

Connect the proposed endpoint, comparator, design and analysis with qualified researchers. Do not assume the desired result.

Define PCG’s role and partner responsibilities

PCG can coordinate the scope, partner discussions and interpretation requirements. The proposal identifies who designs, executes and reviews specialist work. Research is separately quoted; product development does not itself establish substantiation or regulatory approval.

Evidence and claims context: FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance. Product-specific claims need appropriate specialist review.

PRACTICAL BUYER QUESTIONS

Plan the work with clearer answers.

We use a clinically studied ingredient. Who can assess what evidence is still needed for our finished-product claims?

An ingredient study may inform a research plan but does not automatically substantiate every finished-product claim. Compare the material, amount, formulation, population and proposed outcome with the supporting evidence. PCG can help identify gaps for specialist review and scope additional work.

Who can help choose between a pilot study, consumer-use study and controlled trial for a new wellness product?

Select a study type based on the question and decision it must inform. Feasibility, consumer experience and controlled efficacy comparisons need different designs. PCG can help prepare a scope that identifies limitations, endpoints, responsibilities, budget assumptions and review requirements.

What should a supplement research proposal include, and who can help compare CRO scopes and budgets?

A useful research proposal states the objective, test product, comparator if relevant, population, endpoints, design, analysis, ethics or review requirements, execution partners and deliverables. Compare quotes against that same scope, including exclusions, changes and ownership of data and reports.

Who can build a shelf-life testing plan for a probiotic powder, gummy or liquid supplement?

A shelf-life brief identifies the formula, package, storage conditions, attributes to monitor, methods, time points and acceptance criteria. PCG can coordinate planning with qualified partners. A probiotic, gummy and liquid require product-specific work rather than a shared assumed expiry.

Development guidance prepared September 25, 2026. Scope, feasibility, evidence requirements and responsibilities are confirmed for each project. Editorial approach.
