Require a clear customer need, a feasible product, and a decisive next test before funding a trend-led concept.
The source context
TikTok’s 2026 report presents curiosity as a driver of discovery. Discovery is a useful starting signal, but it does not establish repeat demand, product performance, or commercial viability. Source ↗
PCG perspective · The following is our proposed development framework, not a finding of the cited source.
Define the need without the trend name
Describe the customer’s problem without referencing a hashtag, celebrity, or platform. If the idea only makes sense when the trend is mentioned, the underlying need may not be clear enough. A durable brief identifies a person, a use occasion, and an existing compromise. This exercise does not reject culturally relevant ideas; it makes their value testable beyond the platform that surfaced them.
Score five independent questions
Use a simple one-to-five internal score for clarity of need, distinctiveness of solution, feasibility, evidence burden, and repeat-use potential. Record a reason for every score. Do not average away a fatal weakness: a concept with no feasible delivery route should remain on hold even if its cultural relevance is high. Treat the scorecard as a discussion aid, not a statistically validated prediction.
Run the cheapest decisive test
Choose the test that could change the investment decision. If the uncertainty is taste, a survey about packaging is a distraction. If the uncertainty is consumer comprehension, commissioning a large production run is premature. Set a budget and a decision date for each test. Document in advance what would lead to proceed, revise, or stop so the team does not redefine success after seeing the results.
Keep a parking lot, not a graveyard
An idea can be wrong for this quarter without being wrong forever. Record why it was paused: economics, technical limitations, evidence, or lack of demand. Revisit it when that constraint changes, rather than whenever a new video goes viral. This creates a portfolio of informed options instead of a cycle of abandoned projects and rediscovered ideas.
